Stainless steel is a ferrous material and the cutting action will generate sparks unless it is cooled by liquid. I would advise against cutting it on your router. From contributor X: I was once talking with my tooling salesman and he mentioned that he sells special router bits to a door company which uses them to rout steel covered doors.

These are similar to spiral router bits in appearance and come in either carbide or high-speed steel. And, the cutting is done on a milling machine with the work mounted to a rotary table, using a cutting/coolant fluid. A router spins way to fast for cutting steel. For cutting a 1/4" groove in mild steel, the proper speed would be about 1200/1300 RPM.
Almost all types of materials including woods, composites, steel, plastics, glass, foam, acrylic, metal materials etc can be cut by using CNC machining. Not only CNC routers are applied to cut the materials but designing and engraving them too. CNC routers come with a spindle in each of them that spin them at higher speed and cut the materials ...

With this, your CNC router might start to break, especially if the sweet spots are not considered leading to wearing out, and inferior resultant surface finish. Also, keep in mind the stickiness nature of steel. The steel deposition on your cutting edge means that the device will not be serving you for long, mainly if you are using the CNC router at 20,000 RPM or even more. Navigating through these challenges means that you can apply any router in cutting any metal, including steel. What ...

If you want to know the proper speed for cutting steel with an end mill, visit the Little Machine Shop. They have a speed chart and they sell end mills -- littlemachineshop dot com/mobile/speeds_feeds.php.
However, you can still have your CNC router work like a CNC mill but for cutting mild steel only. You just need to select the right router bits and cutters (with smaller diameters) to achieve precision cutting. Note: According to the CNC experts, it is better to avoid using a CNC router for cutting stainless steel. This is because the cutting action on such a ferrous and high chromium-content material might produce high sparks unless a liquid is used to cool down the cutting process.
Not really! If that were a heavier machine, the last cut would not even be considered that difficult. Here is a full slotting cut on a Matsuura VMC: Slotting C45 carbon steel: Impressive feed rate. Short answer: bad idea. February 23, 2008. I need some shapes cut out of 0.8mm thickness stainless steel. I normally get this done by a laser cutting company, but I recently bought a CNC router and I'm thinking I might be able to cut through the stainless steel using the router. Importantly, the cutting tip size must be no larger than 1.5mm.
