With the help of google and knowledgeable people on this forum I have managed to slap together a crude laser pointer detection script (Thank You). The code I used can be found here. However, I currently have a 3000mW red laser whose pointer gets picked up by the script easily around maximum 2 meters (6 feet).

If you are just pointing it in the sky I suppose they could get you on some charge, it may not be a felony but if somthing is in the sky it is. I just googled it up since I have heard it before to confirm it.

Been doing this for years. Makes for a faster and more accurate set up, especially for the projector and hanging a screen.

These use a gyroscope to detect the motion of the mouse, and they work quite well. just Google "air mouse". You can use it along with a regular mouse. Both will move the cursor. In trying to find out what sort of attenuation I'd be up against, I googled for phrases like “atmospheric effects on propagation of laser light” but didn’t turn up much for the wavelengths of standard laser pointers. Most of the literature was about communication equipment that seems to be set around 785nm and 1550nm.
The easiest way I have found is to simply dremel, or saw off, the barrel right behind the diode. The barrel will slide right off (make sure to pull the button out of the hole first) and the diode assembly will be left to it' own, you can now rewire as needed. --DDL. Last edited: May 14, 2007. It has to be sold as a separate laser head and power source as the US has a ban on overly enthusiastic laser pointers. It is impossible to use safely unless everyone is wearing laser goggles, reflections everywhere.
We found the only thing that works for TV screen is the gyro mouse. It is in the shape of a laser pointer (and actually includes a red laser light). It takes a little practice to move it in the air in order to move the mouse on TV screen, but it works. The mouse shape can be changed to a hand or even a red dot.
