For some reason most laser cutter manufacturers seem to have very opaque dealer and quote-based pricing schemes which make comparison difficult. I have read about cheap Chinese cutters, but also the dangers of getting one that sucks, with terrible software, and zero support for inevitable issues.

Below $1k there is pretty much only the K40 (40W chinese laser) for around $350 after upgrading you are probably at $500+. The "hobby" lasers start around $2.5k and bigger chinese lasers are around $1.3k.
Cutting is almost whole dependent on wattage. You can cut thicker materials with multiple passes, but only to a point. Secondary to that is the nozzle / lens you use. Example - When I got my 80W, with a 1.5" lens, I unknowingly had an engraving nozzle . I could barely cut 1/4" / 6mm MDF.
